Weight Lifting Straps
I use a variety of tools in the gym that the gym doesn't provide. These are personal items and need to be what you as an individual wants to use. For example you might like a particular type of knee brace or need something for your elbow. I like to use lifting straps as one of my aids in lifting. I've used a variety of types and will discuss them below.
I used a thinner type of strap for years a cotton based type. I've included a couple of pictures below to see what I mean by the different types. Just me in the gym...
Padded style strap
Now there are several different types of the thinner style. One of those types has some pads stitched on to it. The idea is to provide your wrists more padding so that you can have a higher level of comfort. In my opinion those don't provide that much additional comfort while decreasing the ease of cleaning. The padding will absorb your sweat but not allow for ease of cleaning in the washer. You can see what I mean by the clicking on the picture to the side and seeing the Amazon listing.
Straps I don't use
I've also used a type with rubber on the portion wrapped around the bar to aid in grip. I couldn't get them tightly situated on the bar to help me any in gripping it. I felt they were a complete waste of time to use. I couldn't find those as an example but that is something to look out for and in my opinion avoid.
There is also an Oly type strap they use. I tried them and didn't like using them but I can see the benefits like having a quick release option. They work well it was just hard for me to get used to wrapping them and utilizing them on the bar. So I tried them out and then got rid of them after a little while.
Cotton Straps
I really like the Harbinger Heavy Lifting straps from Amazon. You can get them fairly cheap and they last for a very long time. When they get dirty you can throw them in the wash and give them a cleaning. Just don't dry them in the dryer they shrink. I've done that a few times. They will slightly shrink by washing but that will stretch out with just one or two uses. I've added a photo of those here and linked to them in Amazon.
Spud Inc
A couple years ago I found another type of Strap that I really like. They are quite a bit wider and so spread the load out on your wrist. The downside of that is they won't work as well for smaller wrists. Not enough area on the wrist to utilize but I really like them. They come in a few colors and are made out of a nylon type material almost like your tow strap would be made out of. They are made by Spud Inc. You can find them at this Amazon Link. Spud Inc also makes a smaller strap of the same style just narrower which might work better. I've not tried them but they are my favorite style so far.
See the video below for an explanation on how to use straps and why I use them on a regular basis. Hope this helps if you have questions please don't hesitate to ask.
